Reels, carousel or image: which format delivers what?
Reels are the first choice if you want to reach new people: Instagram can recommend Reels of up to 3 minutes even to people who don’t follow you. Carousels explain in stages, a single image announces something and is the quickest to make. Choose the format by goal and effort, not by trend.
As of October 13, 2026
The benchmarks come from tool vendors. Statements on Reels and recommendations come from the Instagram Help Center and trade press. Where something is a rule of thumb and not a documented value, the text says so. Changes: October 13, 2026 – first version. Next review: January 2027.
The short answer: which format for which goal?
| Format | Strength | Effort | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reel | Reach among people who don’t follow you yet: Instagram can recommend Reels of up to 3 minutes to non-followers. | 3 | Results in motion, process, before and after, answers to customer questions. |
| Carousel | Explaining and proving in stages. People who swipe through take their time (rule of thumb). | 2 | Tips, checklists, step by step, references. |
| Single image | Quick to make, one clear message. | 1 | Appointment, offer, new item, thank-you, quote. |
| Story | Closeness to people who already follow you (rule of thumb). | 1 | Same-day news: free appointments, lunch special, behind-the-scenes. |
| LinkedIn document | According to Socialinsider, the format with the strongest engagement rate on LinkedIn. | 2 | Knowledge, checklists and projects for business clients. |
What do benchmarks show, and what don’t they?
In its 2026 benchmarks, Socialinsider measures the engagement rate per follower. Instagram is at about 0.45% (slightly falling), Facebook at 0.15% (steady) and LinkedIn at 5.20% (up 8% on the previous year). On LinkedIn, documents work best (Socialinsider, retrieved October 13, 2026). Other vendors arrive at other values, so the number depends on the method.
- The values compare platforms, not formats. Only for LinkedIn does the source name a strongest format: documents.
- For Instagram, we found no reliable figure per format in our sources. That’s why we give no percentages for Reel versus carousel.
- The data comes from tool vendors, not from the platforms. It shows correlations, not causes.
What the platform itself says: according to Adam Mosseri, watch time, likes and sends (forwards via direct message) count on Instagram, each relative to reach. Likes weigh slightly more among followers, sends among non-followers (Social Media Today, January 22, 2025). So what works is what people watch to the end and send on, in any format. Which format fits your goal?
- You want to reach new people: Reel. Reels up to 3 minutes can be recommended to non-followers; longer ones are not recommended to new audiences (Instagram Creators Blog, January 21, 2025; Instagram Help, retrieved October 13, 2026). Your Reel doesn’t have to run 3 minutes: what matters is that people watch to the end.
- You want to show knowledge and build trust: carousel. One thought per slide, the call to action on the last slide. How to structure it is covered in Carousels, slides and templates.
- You want to announce something: single image. An appointment, an offer or a new item fits in one image and is done in minutes.
- You want to keep existing followers: Story. Show what’s going on today.
- You want to reach business clients: document on LinkedIn. A checklist or a project as a PDF, page by page.
- You’re short on time: single image or carousel from existing photos. A Reel pays off if you’re filming the work step anyway.
And what about Stories?
As a rule of thumb, not a platform statement: Stories mostly reach people who already follow you. They aren’t the tool for reach among strangers. Through companycore, you publish a Story as exactly one image or one video of 3 to 60 seconds, without text and without a link sticker. The editor says: “Story: the text belongs in the image.” That applies to Instagram and Facebook.
How is it on LinkedIn and Facebook?
LinkedIn: A carousel here is technically a document post, that is, a PDF where each page is a slide, up to 100 MB and 300 pages (LinkedIn Help, retrieved October 13, 2026). The API only allows carousel posts as a paid ad, not as organic posts (Microsoft Learn, updated May 13, 2026). In companycore you therefore choose the format Document: 1 to 10 images become a PDF, one image per page. The document’s title is publicly visible.
Facebook: Since June 17, 2025, Facebook shares new videos as Reels (Meta Newsroom, June 17, 2025). In companycore, a Facebook Feed post takes only images; you publish a video as a Reel (3 to 90 seconds, 9:16).
One topic, three formats
One occasion is enough for three posts in three formats. You photograph or film once and spread the material across the posts. The examples are made up.
| Topic | Reel | Carousel | Image |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hairdresser: bleaching | The transformation in 20 seconds | Five care tips after bleaching | Free appointments this week |
| Heating installation: heat pump | The installation in time-lapse | Old system, new system: what changes | Consultation appointments in November |
| Café: filter coffee | Latte art in 15 seconds | How to brew better filter coffee at home, in five steps | The new breakfast menu |
With companycore
You build image posts and carousels in the Visual Designer as Slides; up to 10 images go from there to the Calendar. For Reels, you upload a finished video (up to 3 minutes) in Files (on Home: Photo Library) and schedule it in the Calendar as a Reel; the Post Generator writes the caption in the format Reel (short & punchy). Which formats each platform accepts is covered in Which formats can I post with companycore?.
