Instagram reach dropped? The diagnosis
Before you doubt your content, check whether only the measurement changed. Instagram replaced impressions and plays with “views” in April 2025, and Facebook replaced its impressions with views in November 2025.
As of October 13, 2026
Platforms change metrics and rules often. The information below comes from help pages, guidelines and the trade press. Changes: October 13, 2026 – first version. Next review: January 2027.
Go through the points in order. Point 1 takes two minutes and can explain the whole drop. Always compare 30-day periods, not individual posts.
The diagnosis in 8 steps
- Check whether only the measurement changed. Instagram replaced impressions and plays with “views”; the API changeover took place on April 21, 2025 (according to Metricool Help). On November 15, 2025, Facebook replaced page and post impressions as well as “Page fans” with views and follows (according to Emplifi). Numbers before and after the change are not directly comparable. A drop in the chart can therefore be a measurement change.
- Check your account status. In the Instagram app, open Account Status. There you can see whether your account may be recommended and whether there are policy notices. If nothing is listed there, look for the cause in the points below.
- Check whether your account mostly shows other people’s content. Since April 30, 2026, Instagram no longer recommends accounts that mostly post other people’s photos, carousels or Reels (details in Instagram algorithm 2026). Since July 14, 2025, Facebook has been throttling accounts that repeatedly reuse other people’s videos, photos or text without adding value (TechCrunch). TikTok excludes reused material with nothing new from the “For You” feed (TikTok guidelines, retrieved October 13, 2026). On Facebook, commentary, reactions and your own perspective remain allowed.
- Count your hashtags. Since December 2025, Instagram allows 5 per post at most. The rules and examples are in How many hashtags in 2026?
- Look at format and first seconds. According to “Instagram Ranking Explained” (May 31, 2023, status as of 2023), Instagram shows fewer Reels that have been posted before, are low resolution, carry a watermark, are muted or have a border. Check whether your Reel starts with a clean picture and sound, without someone else’s watermark.
- Check your rhythm. Compare the last 30 days with the 30 days before. Did you post less, use only one format, or was there a long break in between? If you post less, you reach fewer people in total. Guideline values are in How often should a business post?
- Factor in season and holidays. Vacation periods and public holidays can push your numbers down without anything changing at Instagram. If you have been posting for a while, compare with the same period last year.
- Facebook: check your link posts. TechCrunch reported on December 17, 2025 on a Meta test limiting the number of link posts for Pages and profiles in professional mode without Meta Verified (reported: 2 link posts per month, the number varies). We have not checked how far the test has been rolled out today. Links in comments, affiliate links and links to Meta platforms are exempt. This is a test, and not every Page is affected.
The 30-day recovery plan
Once you have found the causes, give yourself 30 days for a clean restart. Instagram evaluates originality on a rolling 30-day basis, so 30 days is a sensible test period.
- 3–5 own posts per week. Photos and videos from your business, no reposts.
- One shareable tip per week. Something people send to someone: a care tip, a price example, a before and after.
- Keep hashtags to 5 at most.
- Mix formats. Alternate between image, carousel and Reel.
- Answer comments in the first hour. Reply right after posting, while the conversation is running.
- Compare after 30 days. Use views, watch time and sends per reach from Insights, not the old impressions.
With companycore
The Calendar shows whether publications are missing in the next 7 days and suggests days for new posts. In the Visual Designer, you turn your own photos into on-brand posts instead of reposting other people’s images. companycore does not show reach statistics; you find your numbers in the platforms’ Insights (more in What companycore can’t do (yet)).
Frequently asked questions
Why is my Instagram reach suddenly dropping?
First check whether only the measurement changed: Instagram replaced impressions with views. After that, mostly other people’s content, more than 5 hashtags, a changed format or a broken rhythm are the most common candidates.
Are views and impressions the same?
No. Instagram replaced impressions and plays with views, and Facebook replaced page and post impressions with views. Numbers before and after the change can’t be compared directly.
How long does it take for reach to come back?
None of our sources gives a time frame. Instagram evaluates originality on a rolling 30-day basis. A period of 30 days is therefore a sensible test period.
Why does my Facebook Page hardly reach anyone anymore?
Your Page competes in the feed with posts from friends, Pages and groups. Meta lists signals such as your past interaction with the Page and the format of the post (Meta Transparency Center, updated October 6, 2026). Also check steps 3 and 8 above.
